{"id":568,"date":"2015-01-07T21:19:51","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T05:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/?p=568"},"modified":"2015-01-07T22:09:11","modified_gmt":"2015-01-08T06:09:11","slug":"applying-optometry-school-letters-recommendation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/applying-optometry-school-letters-recommendation-2015-01-07\/","title":{"rendered":"Applying to Optometry School: Letters of Recommendation!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Applying to optometry school is a long, trying process and while the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.optomcas.org\/\">OptomCAS<\/a> for the Fall 2016 cycle won&#8217;t even open until around July, it\u2019s time to start thinking about your application!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summertime and these applications may seem like a ways away but\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">RIGHT NOW<\/span> is the time to be making the connections and developing relationships with future letters of recommendation writers!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t just go around asking like this, \u201cI\u2019m great! Write about it!\u201d *<strong>self-five*<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-569\" src=\"http:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/self5.gif\" alt=\"self5\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Anyway here\u2019s the lowdown letters of rec:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who to Ask?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Professors are bombarded with students asking for letters so the key is to ask the people who know you best in order to get the best letters. This is the time to be making nice with future potential letter writers and develop the kind relationships that make for compelling letters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basically you are recruiting for your optom school application team, so choose them wisely!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Schools sometimes ask for specific letter writers (like one from a professor, one from an employer, etc.) so research your potential optometry schools\u2019 requirements and plan accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ask In Person.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Everyone really harps on this, as they should<\/em>! You can set up an initial meeting through email to discuss the possibly of them writing a letter for you but you shouldn\u2019t ask outright over the internet; that\u2019s an in person question! Plus what\u2019s that saying, \u201cit\u2019s harder to say no to someone in person\u201d, right?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ask Early.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned before professors are getting flooded with requests and <strong>you want a good letter not a rushed one!<\/strong> The absolute least amount of time is <strong>three weeks<\/strong> to ask for a good letter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Go Asking Prepared.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This last tip will really set you apart from what could be many letter of recommendation a professor has to write. Go to your letter writers with all the materials they may need when writing a beautiful letter about you. These things can include<strong> your resume, CV, and at least a draft or bullet points from your personal statement<\/strong>. You want to set them up and make it easy for them to write a great letter so they can get a feel for exactly what you\u2019re going for your application.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With these things in mind go forth and prosper setting yourself up for the best letters of recommendation possible.
