We are bringing in the New Year with a new segment here on the blog, called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Career Spotlight<\/em><\/span>, where we showcase and explore different specializations, career settings, technological advances, and more in the exciting world of optometry!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With your four years of optometry school you are crowned the title of an OD or Doctor of Optometry then beyond that you can do some residency time or even more school in order to specialize and hone your skills and knowledge in specifically the area of optometry you desire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>For our first trick let\u2019s talk&#8230;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pediatric Optometry<\/span>!<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-644 \" src=\"http:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/18c4749.png\" alt=\"18c4749\" width=\"591\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/18c4749.png 646w, https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/18c4749-300x104.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I thought this would be a good place to start with specializations since it\u2019s still a broad population of patients you will see: <strong>children<\/strong>. Even though pediatric optometry refers to the treatment of the \u201c<em>pediatric population<\/em>\u201d, this actually covers a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">broad age range with widely varying needs<\/span>, including all those between birth and 18 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The early years of a child\u2019s life is a <strong>critical time<\/strong> for vision development and monitoring. Despite the younger infant and toddler patients communication skills not fully developed testing and treatment are still possible through means like <strong>eye muscle movements, visual behavior, and dilation of the eyes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vision problems can have a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>profound effect on how children learn<\/em><\/span> and often parents don\u2019t notice vision problems in children until after a child exhibits problems reading the board at school.
