{"id":673,"date":"2016-12-31T23:23:04","date_gmt":"2017-01-01T07:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/?p=673"},"modified":"2017-07-07T15:38:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T22:38:35","slug":"oat-2017-introduction-guide-optometry-admission-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/oat-2017-introduction-guide-optometry-admission-test-2016-12-31\/","title":{"rendered":"OAT 2017: Introduction Guide to the Optometry Admission Test!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">This is Part 1 of a series of breakdown posts that will outline\u00a0the OAT 2017!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019ve actually done a series like this before but the test has gone through some changes and here at <a href=\"http:\/\/oatcracker.com\">OAT Cracker<\/a> we like to keep you updated to make sure test day is the best day!\u00a0First of all we\u2019ll focus on the specifics of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ada.org\/en\/oat\/guide\">OAT<\/a>\u00a0itself and then in upcoming posts we will discuss each of the sections in detail individually.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Optometry Admission Test<\/strong> is designed by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opted.org\/\">ASCO<\/a>) to assess your readiness for optometry school and is used by all U.S. programs in the application process as <em>a factor<\/em> in their decision.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">The OAT 2017 is a monstrous marathon of an exam with a wide scope of testing topics and clocking in at nearly 5<em><strong>\u00a0hours<\/strong><\/em>!<\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What\u2019s an OATPIN?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">First thing is first you&#8217;ll need an OAT\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ada.org\/en\/oat\/pin\">PIN <\/a>(Personal Identification Number) for authentication for all Optometry Admission Test applications and official score report requests. Before you can even apply to take the OAT, you must obtain a PIN aka an OATPIN.<strong><em> Important: If you have ever taken the OAT before a PIN may have already been assigned to you and you can retrieve it <a href=\"http:\/\/dts.ada.org\/OAT\/CustomerService\/RetrievePIN.aspx\">here<\/a>. If you are a brand new to the OAT entirely you can register for a PIN <a href=\"https:\/\/dts.ada.org\/OAT\/CustomerService\/NewUser.aspx?transaction=OAT\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Applying to take the OAT<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">With your OATPIN you can now apply to take the OAT <a href=\"https:\/\/dts.ada.org\/OAT\/login\/login.aspx\">here<\/a>. Note: once you have been approved to take the exam you have a six-month window to do it after which you\u2019ll have to reapply. If you wish to <a href=\"http:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/should-you-retake-the-oat-2015-04-30\/\">retake the OAT<\/a> you have to wait at least 90 days and if you feel the need to take it more than three times you have to gain special permission. Plus with each retake you\u2019ll have to reapply to take it and pay the test fee again. Speaking of test fee\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">$ Cost of taking the OAT $<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Currently the test fee is\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>$450<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and that includes sending official score reports to the up to 5 schools you specify on your OAT application. If you want your official OAT scores sent to an additional school you didn\u2019t list on the application it\u2019s $36 each. The $450 fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable so pick a date and stick to it! If you must reschedule, well more fees for you:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-675\" src=\"https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-01-at-12.38.19-AM.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2017-01-01-at-12-38-19-am\" width=\"580\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-01-at-12.38.19-AM.png 580w, https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-01-at-12.38.19-AM-300x70.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>*Notice: The test fee changes as of July 1,2017 are now updated in this post!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Scheduling a test date<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Once your OAT application is approved you\u2019ll receive email confirmation and only then can you schedule your test with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prometric.com\">Prometric<\/a>. You can take the test year-round at Prometric Test Centers in your area. Prometric administers quite a few different computer-based tests like the OAT, GRE, MCAT, etc. and depending on the size of test centers, the day you wish to take the OAT can fill up so schedule ASAP!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What&#8217;s on the OAT?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As mentioned earlier, there are four sections to the Optometry Admission Test and we will discuss each in detail in upcoming breakdown posts. There are as followed:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1) Survey of Natural Sciences (100 Questions)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2) Reading Comprehension (50 Questions)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3) Physics (40 Questions)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4) Quantitative Reasoning (40 Questions)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How long is the OAT?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Total test time is around 3.5 hours but there\u2019s an optional 15-minute tutorial (to get you familiar with using the test interface), an optional 15-minute break, and an optional 15-minute survey after the test, so could be closer to 5 hours. With proper practice practice practice and a goodnight\u2019s sleep you can handle no extra breaks in your OAT 2017 test day no problem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Can I use scratch paper?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The test center will provide two note boards and two fine tip markers to use during the test. Scratch paper, pencils, or markers that have not been provided by the testing center are prohibited. The note boards cannot be used as measuring devices and cannot be folded, bent, distorted, or mutilated in any way and you can\u2019t touch the monitor during testing with the boards. All items must be returned to the test administrator before leaving the test center.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OAT Scores<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We outlined the <a href=\"https:\/\/oatcracker.com\/blog\/oat-breakdown-scores-2016-03-22\/\">OAT Scores<\/a> on the blog before so check it out!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Your scores are based on the number of correct responses, which means you\u2019re not penalized for guessing so that means don\u2019t leave any question blank! You will get an unofficial score as soon as you finish the test and official scores are available about 3 weeks later. OAT scores on made on a scale from 200-400 so there\u2019s no passing or failing.
